i get sad, wallow and cry. Or I wait for my work shift to get home, wallow and cry. If I have a friend about I trust, I'll vent my sadness on them. When I wallow, sometimes I listen to sad music or read sad stories to evoke the emotion into the forefront and just feel it. That's how I allow the emotion to be felt. Because I felt it, it becomes valid.
