Holding on to the past

Do you find it hard getting rid of old items? Children’s baby clothes, a particular top or memento that reminds you of a special time? I do, to a fault. Why the heck am I holding on to a particular sweater from 2013 or an empty perfume bottle?

The house where I live is very old, and there are some antique things inside, much much older than I am. I have no right to trash these things, they will still be here when I'm long gone.
My personal belongings are not important, I throw them away when I don't need them anymore.

I do, I can't seem to help it, and I no longer worry about it. Things have a way of representing and preserving part of your life...at least for awhile.

I completely agree 😊@Rambler
Yes. I'm very sentimental so I completely understand. It's those little things that matter to me, and treasures from the past are hard to lose or let go of even if the memories are still ingrained.

@MoonlightLullaby especially, the baby clothes, school drawings, or an d favorite toy. Reminds me of some of the best times when my twins were little ❤️
@TimeStandingStill Aww. I wasn't blessed with children, but I bet it's extremely difficult & tugs at the heart strings.💔
Coz your fondness for those memories won't let you part from them or you are a proud P.R.O.C.R.A.S.T.I.N.A.T.O.R.

Could be 😊@Lyfis2live
Yes, I have family objects that go back to my grandmother, including photo albums. Some things that are more than 100 years old. My grandmother passed before I was born. I have two daughters but no grandchildren. I have no idea why I've held on to these things or that anyone will care about the history of these things.
TimeStandingStill · 46-50, F
You sound just like me. It’s enough that we care about them 😊@notyouraveragedummy

For the same reason that I have held onto a sweatshirt from 1982. Lol

Absolutely! And it is a way for us to document our special times and places luv! Not just something, someone, or a place in time we think about, but a cherished memory we can revisit by still touching and smelling the past experience! Keep them! 💓💓💓
TimeStandingStill · 46-50, F
Yes, that is exactly it! I don’t ever want to lose those moments in my memory 💝@WillaKissing

I have so many antiques it's not funny !
almondflour · 46-50, F
I do. I find it really hard. Especially items from loved ones. I have been reassessing how I am going to go about getting rid of somethings as I don't have much space and want to minimize.
TimeStandingStill · 46-50, F
It is hard to get rid of these things. They are so comforting but bring up so many feelings all at the same time. @almondflour
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Yes but I had a lot of loss trauma in my younger days which almost triggered a mild hoarding disorder. I'm much better at purging now.
TimeStandingStill · 46-50, F
That will definitely do it. Glad you are better @Starcrossed

I think for me, it's OCD-related. Thankfully, I discovered a "jumping-off point" wherein I simply take a picture or video of said object before getting rid of it. Otherwise, I'd have to get in touch with A&E to do an episode of Hoarders on me.
Jonjdw · 51-55, M
I hold onto stuff the that. Yes empty stuff. It it does got to go eventually end it does
Majorsite · 61-69, M
I collect antiques, So, No !
pianoplayingsteve · 31-35, M
Yeah. I immediately messed my life up the day I turned 18 as my parents intentionally gave me a warped view of how the world works. I wish I could go back to 17 years and 364 days and make some very small changes and I’d actually be okay right now. So I’m just stuck thinking about being 17 and 364 days and hating my parents for not giving me some guidance that was very very simple, but one that you’d need a trusted adult to tell you else that knowledge just won’t be there in time
