What Accent?

I was having a conversation with someone not long ago and this man nearby was staring at me. I'm thinking um, can I help you? When I was finished with my convo he walks to me.
Where are you from? I'm from here, 馃嚭馃嚫 You were born here? Yes. Where are your parents from? They're 馃嚞馃嚛 and 馃嚡馃嚥. Ok, I heard a Caribbean accent. Haha.. me? An accent. I don't think so. Are you sure? Yeah the way you pronounce some of your words. I had friends from the West Indies. Thats how I know. Oh ok, I guess. That's very interesting that you picked up on that. I never really thought about it. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed if I didn't have friends from the Caribbean. 馃槉

Perhaps you get a light Caribbean accent from your friends and family even though you鈥檝e never lived there. Our accent derives mostly from those with whom we spend the most time.

I am often told even by strangers that I sound very proper or southern/country. I am a country girl and very southern, but I never noticed it in my voice too much until as of lately. I've literally been scaring myself because I use to tell people "what accent?" and I can hear it a lot now and it's weird.

Well, as Professor Higgins taught us in Pygamalion/My Fair Lady, we all have accents. Even those of us who studiously try to have only what we believe is a "proper" accent.
