How do you get rid of house guests who refuse to leave?

I am especially curious about the legal situation. What if someone asks you to stay overnight because of an emergency and then, in spite of all discussion, negotiations and agreements, they keep on staying, making one excuse after another? You only let them stay one night...but they've extended their stay indefinitely. If you call the police, can you toss this person out? I've read about fired nannies and fired maids who stayed after being fired and then had to be legally evicted, a long, expensive process. Is it like that for unwanted house guests?

I think in most places after 30 days it's considered a residence, and they need to be evicted. Before that, just call the cops, put there stuff on the porch and change the locks

@Pherick: When it happened to me years ago, the two people never left my apartment. And they were both bigger and stronger than I was. They stayed six weeks. I was in a near hysterical state, threatening everything but unable to do much since I had the 'flu and was also working long hours on a stressful job. The police said I'd have to evict them or convince them to leave.

@Pherick: I guess they got tired of my yelling at them so they left. But it's made me afraid to invite anyone to stay. Right now, I live in a rooming house, no guests allowed, so I'm safe from that kind of situation.
