Is it normal for companies to ask if you'd like to help with another departments duty??

We are short housekeepers and they asked me if I'd like to split my job and work as both front desk and house keeping Bc I'm shy? What is that? I'm always talking to the customers and joking with employees. They said it was my house but still...?
