What should I do if I ever find myself trying to help an injured animal (such as a bird)?

So today, after I got home from church, my dad walked outside and saw an injured bird (it was a female Red Breasted Robin to be exact) in the middle of our street (fortunately, cars never really pass by on our street). It's left leg was injured, and it couldn't really fly.
My dad then grabbed a box, and we gently put the bird in the box. I then called every shelter and refugee center I could find that was located in our area, but most of them were closed. Luckily, I found this one shelter that's in the area, and they said they would take the bird (and they did). I was just in time, too, because they closed at 3 (it was currently 2:15 when I called).
Did I do the right thing? I didn't want to leave the bird to die, but at the same time I'm not sure if it was okay to give an undomesticated bird to a shelter since it is wildlife.

I feel really bad for the poor bird, because it was scared to death. I wanted to hug it to reassure it (even though that probably would have scared the bird even more). T^T
I hope it's doing well. ;-;
Depending on where you are from and what the possibilities are in your country: Taking the bird (or any other injured animal) to a vet, and like what annamarie65 said, I agree with calling animal control, i think that's the safest and best thing to do FIRST of all. Because any injured animal could also injure you (out of fear and pain, they never know that some people do have good intentions ;) ) and the people from animal control have special equipment, special handgloves to put the animal into a special box to take it to the vet.

you can call animal control. they usually have a wild animal group that would come and get it. i would carefully try to pick up the bird and make it as comfortable as possible till then. I had the same thing happen but it was with a baby hummingbird...

@BlackBloodDemon: i love all animals...right now i am trapping field mice who somehow found their way into our apartment, and i will release them back into the wild a few miles from me lol. im going to try and raise the two babies that i found, they wont survive in the wild.

I think you did the right thing. At least the robin now has a shot a recovery, where as before you found her, her odds of surviving were small indeed. (think cats).

Yea, hopefully, and there are a lot of street cats roaming around in my neighborhood.

You did, I promise. And, cats aren't too picky when it comes to dinner!

It really doesn't matter, it could live or it could die. You did what you did, it's over.

But the birdie ;-;

It's out of your hands now
