What's the best way to purge yourself of the things you no longer need in your life?

And conversely, what is the one thing you would never get rid of?

I gave a house full of stuff away, some things had never been opened or used. This is from my mothers estate and part of my divorce stuff. I am the opposite of horder. I have several pieces of her jewelry and that is all I kept.

As long as you dont regret it, thats fine. Its always nice to keep something small that holds sentimental value :)

@Stereoguy: I found that by giving stuff away you can get movers and packers for free. I was just too overwhelmed to deal with all that stuff. What I suggest is go there and look through it and take the things you want. Some places will buy the whole house full and take it away ot have a big give away. The decision is hard to make. I am very sorry for your loss.
@NewKidInTown: I have no regrets at all and I feel better that the stuff could be used.

@Stereoguy: Love(or lust) has a funny way of affecting one's decision making ability!
My condolences.

@SBelle: There are donation centres and charities that are happy to take your things as long as they are in a useable condition.
@NewKidInTown: Everything was in excellent condition some still in the boxes never opened. I wanted to give it to a REACH resale store but it had to be packed and hauled away. I was in no condition to do all that because I had dealt with hospice and her death. I was exhausted.

@Stereoguy: well I don't think it is in any way wrong to sell the things that you can. You could always take a portion of the proceeds and donate in his name to a soup kitchen or other small local charity.

@SBelle: One way of looking at it, especially if it is good quality items in good condition, is that it will make someone happy to use or have them, perhaps someone who wouldnt be able to afford it otherwise. Tjat is a nice legacy for your mother.
And you :)

@Stereoguy: Take your time and figure out what it is you really want to do with it. It is an emotional time for you and you dont want to do anything you would regret later. No rush.

@Stereoguy: I like to give locally like something to help women of domestic violence or kids group homes, things like that. I think it helps and makes a difference.

@SBelle: I agree. And they are very appreciative.
@Stereoguy: That is always good to do.

@NewKidInTown: exactly!
