Personally, I think "none of your business," is a perfectly valid thing to say to people at work.
Just explain, as you did here, that you want to keep work and private life separate. There is nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, that's what I tend to say. "Sorry, but I like to keep work and privacy separated." I guess that's the best way to say it then.. I only stick to hobbies and what I did in the weekend (only the fun parts, I don't talk about less fun parts, if there are any LOL)

I think truth is polite. You might hurt them, slightly and temporarily, but in the long run, honest is the best policy.
