Is this legal? At what point should something be done?

In the United States by the way.

So. My boyfriend has a full time job. His employer changed the insurance company maybe 6 months ago, as well as the payment process. He has been getting paid but has no insurance, he has been employed for 3 years without insurance from his employer. Now he's being told he isn't allowed to call in sick because his boss is out of town and hasn't hired anyone else. He has the flu though, lots of vomiting, a fever, etc. He works at a hotel, having to deal with people and touch lots of things. I'm baffled.
Why does he have no insurance and where do they get off telling him he cannot call in sick no matter what. What if he gets hit by a car? Would they still fire him for not coming in?

I mean, three years and he can't call in? That alone sounds absurd.

He rarely even calls in. He was told he can't because nobody can cover his shift. Just seems to me like his manager is shit really, there should be 3 people lined for that specific job. There's only him working 7 days a week. @xRedx
