How can one be kind/ likeable to people but without being a pushover

you learn discernment ,,you only help those that really need help ,,good stewards are not enablers ,,,if they can work they need to work ,or not eat
I learned the hard way
If people end up talking bad about you anyway ,even after you have done all you can do to help them
Why not just cut to the chase ,let them talk about you for saying no ,,,not for being a sucker
My kids say this is the best words of advice I ever gave them
We help people ,,but only those willing to help themselves
Good rule of thumb is ,,if they have family and they won't help them ,,more then likely there is a good reason
