What city to you recommend moving to in the US?

Hey guys,

I'm planning to move back to the States soon.

Just wonder where you recommend living.

I never want to live down south again, I don't like extreme weather (but it's negotiable if it's cold), I need a diverse city, and there should be public transportation!

Some that I've thought of are: Denver, Seattle (TOO EXPENSIVE), Portland, Madison, and Indianapolis.

Expense is a major concern (recentish college grad)

Hopefully your cities are awesome!

Madison has buses but I don’t know how much they are used. It’s really small too.

Portland and Seattle are too expensive but I love them.

I have a strange affinity for Omaha.

Denver is a great city with great public transportation.

Depends on your definition of small. The Madison metro area is over 500,000. For a mid size city, it has more than its share of excellent food and culture. UW-Madison is one of the best public universities in the country and an absolute monster in terms of economic development and creating an urban feel in the region. @SW-User

@luckranger71 lived there for 23 years. My parents were there up until five years ago.

It’s a ton of sprawl with a little downtown and too much campus.

I’d pick the Twin Cities over Madison any day.

Fair enough. I’m two hours from the Cities but have never taken to them. They’re nice but ... just can’t put my finger on it. @SW-User

@luckranger71 it’s total sprawl there too. They are at least trying with public transportation.

They also have a lot of headquarters there.

@SW-User hey, guys! Thank you for this discussion. It's just what I need!

I'm coming from a VERY large city with a world class transportation system. I've lived down south where there's literally no public trans... Not even buses.

I've never been up north or to the midwest, so I need people like y'all to be my eyes and ears.

I prefer smaller big cities, I think. As long as there's tons of diversity, delicious American food, plentiful volunteer and work opportunities I'm game!

I believe Minneapolis is more expensive than Madison. Is it colder? Also, do you know of another Midwestern city like Madison and Minneapolis?
