Advice from other's on antidepressants

I'm not sure what to do.. I want to feel good about myself because that's when I can feel confident and able to easily talk to people. I've had a lot of people take advantage of my kindness, which has left me slightly broken, but street smart. I need to be happy again! I've been offered a prescription from my doctor but I wanted to see if I could self treat. Now think maybe drugs could be the answer XD

If you’re diagnosed with something like clinical depression, perhaps. Strictly from your description, meds sound somewhat premature. At the very least, I’d get a second medical opinion.

@LyricalOne any doc would recommend them!

@Wiseacre Not true at all. And there’s certainly no harm in getting a second opinion.

@LyricalOne I've seen a few people about it and explained that I wanted to treat it without meds.

@millennialgrandpa Have you been given a medical diagnosis? What are they recommending the meds for specifically?

@LyricalOne I've had 2 medical diagnosis and saw a therapist for about 2 months. I did this in secret too. I've been too insecure to tell my parents

@millennialgrandpa

Diagnosed with what?

Remember that all parents want is for their child to be healthy and happy. They could be an important source of support. And I’m sure they wouldn’t want you to suffer in silence.

@LyricalOne Server depression. Idk i was just recommended to a therapist. I've tried talking about my feelings to my parents before but they just told me that suicide is selfish and all that jive. So I act like nothing is bothering me when I'm around them. It seems easier than them getting angry at me for being depressed

@millennialgrandpa Are you thinking about killing yourself now? Are you able to function in your everyday life?
millennialgrandpa · 31-35, M
@LyricalOne The thing is I didn't even tell them that I had suicidal thoughts. They just assumed. I function properly in the real world. It's just that my head is full of dark thoughts. I haven't thought about suicide in a while. Suicide thoughts can be triggered with me easily. I don't even have to be having a bad day to think that I no longer want to exist

@millennialgrandpa A mild dose of anti-depressants might not be the worst thing in the world. You have an illness. There’s no shame in that. It would be like taking meds for a heart condition, diabetes, or cancer. Just that mental illness is still so stigmatized. Has people thinking that taking meds is an awful thing. No they’re not for everyone but for some they can be a lifesaver.
