How do you get around fixing deployed airbags after an accident?

The cost to repair the airbags is too much. What do you do with deployed airbags to avoid the cost?

Part of the roadworthiness certificate for your vehicle is based on all airbags being installed and functioning normally. Airbags are not optional equipment, but are mandated by the DOT and form part of the original certification of the vehicle from the manufacturer. As well, if you operate a vehicle with airbags removed, your car insurance is no longer valid. If you are involved in an accident whereby a passenger in your car becomes injured as a result of the airbags being previously removed, you can be sued. With the automatic cancellation of the insurance, any litigation filed against you could leave you suddenly homeless... literally.

@swirlie The mechanic shop does not allow the vehicle to leave their shop unless the airbags are repaired anyway - due to liability.
Too bad I didn't get into a wreck while driving a 1960's vehicle, huh? (of which I have done so before).

Yeah, airbags save lives and reduce injuries but to replace them sure does cost an arm and a leg! (pun intended)

I've been homeless before, just not due to litigation of any sort.
