I do think this is a tough situation. As a teacher, I feel like before I do any type of 'correction' I try to 'catch them doing something right'. Point out all of the stuff they are getting right...do this for a while then introduce ways they need to change. But you have to be sincere in your praise, or else they will 'smell' the insincerity. But tough situation...no doubt.
