Yes, I'm a recovered alcoholic. I gave that up when I was 23. In more recent years I gave up drinking soda and coffee.
On the other hand I still smoke cigarrettes. I'm stiil in negotiations with my subconscious mind as far as smoking is concerned.
From my personal point of view giving up an addiction requires our subconscious and conscious minds to agree. Those negotiations can take years.
Maybe you could give me your opinion on that as a psychology student.

@Wraithorn Normally, when you take part in a habit it is usually fairly conscious if it is something like taking out a cigarette :) Happy hormones are released for a lot of these sorts of habits which makes you get withdrawal symptoms... In my opinion, it is good to be aware of what triggers those habits (which would be any stimuli that are associated with the habit) but there are other sorts of methods too I believe.

@MissMoon Ok thanks. It took me a year or two of thinking about giving up each of the above until I actually managed it.
After years, sort of out of the blue, one day I just felt or decided that today is the day that I can finally stop. So I did and experienced no withdrawal symptoms.
I do have quite an active imagination but this just felt like agreement from my subconscious mind. When it agreed then giving up was easy.

@Wraithorn Well everyone's different anyway :) I have an addictive personality so giving things up is really difficult.
Luckily, I have never taken up smoking and I only drink a few times a year. My addictions are basically just caffeine and small habits that I have (such as having to check doors three times before I leave home). I used to be addicted to food but I am a lot better with that now. :D
