If all the world's a stage, where does the audience sit?

Philosophically one could argue that the audience could be considered God. Or the NSA or former KGB, I guess. But remember, more than anyone else, the audience pays attention to the people that are actually doing things, not the ones that are supposed to be trees and stand around doing nothing but wave their branch-arms about aimlessly. Also, your acting can be bad, and you should feel bad for that. Get your act together and actually do something if you want to be remembered for your greatness :P

It really depends on what type of stage it is. It could even be argued that you're the main character of your play, the people you talk to being the other characters and the people surrounding you acting as the extras and the rest of the world is the audience, despite being on the stage. The stage is not a set area anyway. In many plays, directors use the audience as an entrance when hoping to do something different, such as surprise the audience. So yeah. Lots of different ways we can see this.

You could very well be the main character of the play, and everyone else just side actors, or perhaps even projections of the mind, as would be in dreams.

Dreams - interesting. Your statement allows dreams to be seen and linked to real life in a new and different way o: awesome food for thought!

You cannot prove to me that you aren't a projection of my mind. In my dreams, a projection could just as easily argue that it actually exists and is not a projection of my mind.

I would argue the universe is the stage and life itself is the main cast. Our individual stories do matter, but all life is equal in the eyes of the universe. The audience doesn't matter, the ratings don't matter, the closing of the theater doesn't matter; what matters is we put on the best damn show we possible can.

The original quote does not mention the audience. It states that we are all players. So you are the player and the audience all at once. It was Shakespeare right?

Maybe the audience is whoever or whatever is running the computer on which our universe is being simulated.
