Does anyone know at what point many colleges and universities gave up on teaching reasoning skills?

At what point did it start and how and why. When I was in University the power of reason was a primary instruction, but it has changed somewhat.

It's all about job-training now.

@hunkalove But did they at least learn critical thinking??
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@okaybut I doubt it. That wasn't even taught when I was in college in the 1960s.

the student should be prepared coming into college...
that's a tool students should have learned in high school...
however, i am more than aware of the short comings of the modern curricula

@SW-User I would agree that a major aspect of logical thinking can be found in classical literature (and Philosophy). Good call.

@SW-User Cool. :)
It's still there, but only in select schools like grammar or private schools. Same applies to universities.
Teachers /professors who aren't paid well usually do not sweat it out as much!
@okaybut Sadly 75% of the teachers who have taken up this profession are here only for the stable income and pensions. Very few are passionate about it.
We were lucky to have had great teachers, isn't it? :)

@Vivaci Maybe that is why? Seeking the purity of knowledge is not a passion as much as it used to? For me there is nothing more beautiful. The greater your knowledge, hopefully the greater your connection with reality.
@okaybut Teaching is a noble profession. 🤗 Your students are so fortunate to have you as their teacher.
Every Plato needs a teacher like Socrates!

all i can remember was sitting in lecture after lecture. there was no give and take. just mindless chatter

@akindheart So sorry...for me it was an amazing discovery of the power of reason that stayed with me my entire life.
