According to AI:

"In August, Iceland experiences about 64% cloud cover, making it quite overcast for a significant portion of the month. The clearest day typically occurs on August 6, with only 38% of the time being clear or mostly clear."

So your chances of seeing the few minutes of totality are somewhat less than 50-50, unless you fly over the clouds in a plane.

@Thinkerbell yes I am aware of this. gotta think positive though

GoldnJulz · 46-50, F
@happyjason I wondered how your trip went! Hope it was amazing!
GoFish · 41-45, F
If you want Iceland is beautiful and you can see the northern lights there ☺ have you been before?
happyjason · 56-60, M
@GoFish should be 50-60 just how I like it!
GoFish · 41-45, F
@happyjason oh nice cold but not freezing cold? lol
happyjason · 56-60, M
@GoFish most people think of Iceland as the arctic I guess because of its name? but its not that far north

I was in Cornwall UK for the eclipse in '99 and although it was cloudy it was still worth seeing.

We stood on a cliff top as the sky grew darker and did glimpse totality and the diamond ring effect.
nobodyishome · 31-35, F
The earth is flat. You might fall off from the north pole. I did once, in my dream
Adstar · 56-60, M
Do you know the expected weather conditions that usually dominate in Iceland on the date of the future eclipse???

It would be a big disappointment if you go and the sky have 100% cloud cover..

Eclipses usually do better in dry countries.. Dry desert countries..
happyjason · 56-60, M
@Adstar this is true and this is exactly what happened to me when I planned my last eclipse sojourn in April 2024
Mellomarsha · 61-69, F
There's 1972 precedent for that, cf. Carly Simon.
happyjason · 56-60, M
we went, me and tai and of course we missed the eclipse it was overcast all day. we knew this was a strong possibility but we made the best of it. its a pretty country!
Adstar · 56-60, M
This one would probably be the better one to organize a holiday for.. Better chance of sunny weather..

August 2, 2027: Visible through North Africa, the Middle East, and southern Spain.
GoldnJulz · 46-50, F
The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, in Iceland will last about 2 hours in total for the entire partial-to-finish event, while the period of complete darkness (totality) will last between 1 minute and 2 minutes 18 seconds, depending on your exact location.
So you tell me is that worth the cost of the travel in time and money ??
happyjason · 56-60, M
@GoldnJulz that's a great question. the value of the investment in time and money is based on the fact that a solar eclipse in totality is a once in a lifetime viewing opportunity. throw into the mix that the weather in Iceland is typically overcast...and herein lies the dilemma. I have decided to go!! just bought my tickets

@happyjason I hope you enjoy your trip !! Glad you’re going for it. It’ll be an adventure no matter what!!!
