Just wondering

Is Jello a solid or a liquid?

It’s bones

@RebelFox I knew it came from animals but not from bones. Thanks 😊

Jello is a gel, more specifically a hydrogel. That means it’s a matrix of cross linked material with water in the spaces.

It’s not really like a liquid, as the cross liked solid prevents fluid flow. Fluids have what is called no shear modulus, so they can’t support shear strain. Which is why they just pour everywhere.

It’s more like a solid in that it does have sheer modulus, though a small one. When the jello warms the sheer modulus decreases and so cubes of jello get floppy and turn to liquid.

@CopperCicada A competent and concise answer! 🌷
@helenS I was thinking a better answer is that the jello is a colloid, a system where solid bits are suspended in water. A two phase system. What makes it a gel is that at lower temperatures the gelatin bits forms a network that traps the water. Then there is a shear modulus, it can “stand up”. Raise the temperature and the network falls apart and you have a simple colloid. Viscous liquid of solid bits in water.
Liquid I think -but very viscous. Like glass is also a liquid.

EDIT - apparently things have moved on since I was at school and glass is now an "amorphous solid". So who knows what jello is! 🤣

@helenS
An amorphous solid is simply a liquid that does not flow. 😏
No it's not. It is a solid that doesn't form a long range crystal structure, but it isn't a liquid. Polymers for example.
helenS · 36-40, F
@MethDozer A short-range structure is found in almost all liquids. Water is a perfect example; liquid Helium is the big exception.

@helenS True
huggy001 · 56-60, M
id say its a semi solid

It's a brain-like thing.

Gross is what it is

Much like today's world, a hollow substance without any direction and a lot of righteous speak

I hate jello, I am more of a pudding guy. It tastes better.

I heard somewhere that "Raspberry Mango" flavored Jell-O has been discontinued 😕
Now is that true???
ElRengo · 70-79, M
Gels and Sols are not states of matter, are colloids.
Sutten · 36-40, F
Its a gel in colloidal form - semi solid
SW-User
Semi-solid at room temperature or gelatinous.
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
It jiggle jiggle ....
Lilymoon · F
It's a liquid.
assemblingaknob · 26-30, F
It's soliquid
Yassmeene · 36-40, F
Jelly is liquid I guess,it only becomes half-solid in temperatures below 27 degrees Farenheit.

🐒 its a bit of both 😉
Elanor · F
If it falls off the plate it’s liquid haha
MethDozer · M
Pure unhydrated gelatine is a solid substance with a crystalline structure.
