I trust the scientific method over public opinion driven in part by superstition.

Science is great. A cardinal rule of science is that "proven" is a bad word. "Consensus" was also a bad word. Science is supposed to be fluid and change with new information. Even the few laws we have (like gravity) can be changed if someone were to find something new about them.

Science is framed by caveats: from what we know, now, <statement>
But consensus is HUGELY important, including the special consensus of consilience.
Gravity is a good example in that Newton's classical mechanics and his law of universal gravitation give results which are far more accurate than he could have measured, and we still do mist practical work using those things.
Semiconductors are a game-changer, though...

Scientists have biases too. Don't place your faith blindly.
