At my junior school (8-11) the cane on the palm was the standard punishment, usually just one stroke. The cane used was a lighter junior school cane, suitable for use on the hands. I cannot ever recall any injuries.
Boys and girls were always very compliant with holding out their hands. Many boys were pleased shortly after being caned for the first time and would often show you the tell tale red line across their palm. For

@Retrospection1: You are right: we had to get it stoically in the class for not making a laughing-stock of ourselves, even after getting 5 strokes many of us had tears in their eyes.
