Phrases from the distant past

When I was young, very many years ago, my mum used to take me with her shopping and visiting people. If I misbehaved, or behaved less than perfectly, she had two phrases that compelled instant obedience.
The first was:
"Wait till I get you home!"
The second:
"I'll deal with you later."
These phrases could be combined into a single, chilling sentence:
"I'll deal with you when we get home."
Any one of these was sufficient to create an impeccably behaved child or youth in the hope that mum would forget the earlier misdemeanours and remember only the perfect daughter of the latter part of her trip!

My parents didn't use physical discipline (not in the formal sense, anyway), but I know that it wasn't at all unusual when I was wee, and I had schoolfriends who were regularly disciplined with the slipper or the belt. I often heard parents saying things like 'I'm going to skelp your backside!' or 'Do you want me to take your pants down when we get home?'. I even remember kids having their backsides smacked openly in the street. Nobody thought anything of it then.
WonderGirl · 41-45
@SeekingConnection I've seen a mother smack her child on the backside out in the street. It looked to me that the child had no idea why. She would just be crying and screaming.
@WonderGirl Spanking can be very scary and when they actually happen, as is clear from SW posters, they create crystal clear lifelong memories. I hope that you didn't worry about it too much!
SuziSatan02 · 46-50, F
@WonderGirl Out of interest, where did this happen? - I know this sort of thing ("public" punishment) is still not-unusual in a number of "non-Western countries"

My mother always said Wait Till Your Father Gets Home. My father had a belt hanging in the closet and threatened to use it. For my whole life, he never used it, but I was terrified of it. I was never hit either.
daddybloke · 46-50, M
we had three phrases that struck the fear of god into us the 1st two were exactly the same as yours but the 3rd one was wait till your father gets home, that meant spending the rest of the day terrified of what was going to happen, we would do extra jobs and be really nice and helpful to mum hoping she would change her mind but she never did
SuziSatan02 · 46-50, F
@daddybloke In my turn it wasn't being helpful - just trying any kind of distraction technique, whether it was trying to get them talking about something else (however ridiculous) or trying to create some problem which would take their mind off it...or, when we had a house with a cellar, just ineffectually "hiding" in the hope that they'd forget. It didn't work.
SuziSatan02 · 46-50, F
@SuziSatan02 And of course it wasn't the spanking that I was really afraid of...
daddybloke · 46-50, M
@SuziSatan02 what was you afraid of ?

another comment my mother used to say when with my sister and myself when visiting others was. "We cannot stay long, we have some chores to do at home that cannot wait"
translation=
it meant my sister and myself would be over our mum's lap or bending over clutching our knees when we got home. Funny how a post can remind one of such times

@Dez580 Free entertainment indeed- or studying new techniques.

@naughtyschoolboy Well, I don't mean this to be making light of your predicament, but I know (as much from correspondence as experience) that it could have been much worse...at least NSB's aunt and cousins, and Dez's mother's friends were only voyeuring the spanking
SW-User
My mom also used ”wait till I get you home”.
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@SW-User It sent shivers down one's spine, didn't it? And made other parts tense!
melissa001 · 56-60, F
After the fact that we got in trouble, she would spank us or use a paddle. Well our instinct was to run knowing she couldn't catch us. Her saying was always " if you run it's going to be worse when I do get you". So we totally would stop and get our spankings. Lol.
miscreant6x6 · 56-60, M
"I'll deal with you later" was a chilling fore-warning.

Whether at school or from an elder.

It always ended painfully.

@SuziSatan02 very clever use of the word 'do' in such instances Suzi. Are you familiar with such a phrase as it never happened to me in conjunction with strict CP ?

It is wonderful how well behaved a child can be when they realise they are in danger of being spanked! Of course, for these phrases to work the child has to know they will be spanked if they are naughty again and to know that the spanking will be a very unpleasant experience.
johnstretton2 · 61-69, M
@MandyMitchell And I imagine that, despite what the experts now tell us, it was an effective way of deterring future misbehaviour.
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@johnstretton2 Pupils who had been whacked seldom caused trouble for a while. The first whacking warmed, but the thought of subsequent treatment on the same place was quite a deterrent. A second whacking would have been harder and sorer.
SuziSatan02 · 46-50, F
@johnstretton2 I suspect some school nurses knew that best of all !
Dez580 · 61-69, M
or "we need to have al ittle chat don't we" always meant a spanking. Still i used the same phrase often with my own family
miscreant6x6 · 56-60, M
@Dez580 Yes and there was not much chatting !
Strictdad1965 · 56-60, MVIP
I heard those too but first I would get the look you knew you was going to be in trouble
helenS · 36-40, F
@Strictdad1965 Yes but I'm sure you behaved as well and politely as you could, in order to avoid repetition of the procedure.
Elisbch · M
My father would use those same phrases. 😕
TAReturns · M
Good luck with that ;)
barney1 · M
I heard both of those, plus wait till i speak to your father about this!!!
MandyMitchell · 80-89, F
@barney1 My father was usually away, so I never heard that one.
barney1 · M
@MandyMitchell sadly for me mine wasn't!!
helenS · 36-40, F

Are you a dom9nant take charge take control type of woman ??
@helenS Thank you, Helen of S. You are my favorite SW philosopher.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Alfred22 Thank you – I still prefer Hegel over Richard Rorty and Donald Davidson though!
@helenS Greetings Helen of S.

Hegel aimed to account for all of world history. The two Americans had more modest goals.

I preferred Kim's thinner account of so-called "mental" events and mental causation but Davidson is right about two events being identical only if they have the same causes AND the same effects. Rorty was on the wrong side of whether Philosophy should try to "get it right" or be an accurate representation of nature. Clearly it should.

Hegel thought that history was fulfilled with the unification of some form of the German state. He may not have included all, of or possibly any, of S. So, watch out for Hegel's World Spirit lest it leave you and all you love behind.
