Do you believe corporal punishment was abolished in schools because they found out certain pupils were secretly enjoying it?

There is a popular belief that that was the reason why. Your thoughts?

Kids that got the cane was treated like heroes and the ones to hang around with

@nevergiveup We were all very proud of our stripes when we got it.
@Sharon Did you get a lot of stripes
Sharon · F
@nevergiveup Quite a lot. I got the slipper a lot more though.

@Sharon the first caning or strapping on the bottom was seen as a rite of passage at secondary school. If you hadn’t had to bend over, you weren’t one of the In Crowd.

@jackcros especially if done in front of your class. But it was important you didn't make any fuss, before, during and after. Then you were a member of the club!
@SW-User did you join the club like me
SW-User
@nevergiveup yes. With a group of about 8 other boys. It wasnt so bad being in a larger group and it was just 1 stroke. Glad I'd had it a bit later!
@SW-User I got 6. But i got a lot at home so he could not make me cry. I think that pissed him off lol

@nevergiveup I wouldn't have liked 6. You obviously got prepared for it at home. I noticed that pupils who had had it a few times, were less daunted than newbies.

@SW-User Take it like a man, at least in an all boys school
Sharon · F
@nevergiveup I got the cane at home quite often too. At least 6 and usually 12 on the bare so a normal school caning was relatively tame compared to that.

@Sharon my parents helped me with school as well. Mum was good at French and maths, dad with the practicals like electrical wiring. Both tanned my backside regularly to help me with school inflictions!

@jackcros I agree totally. I was regarded by many boys as a quiet goody goody and generally ignored during my first year of secondary school. In my second year I made a mistake and had to bend over for the first time. I had two strokes. The rest of the class were surprised to see my stripes when we next changed for PE and I was accepted in the clan from then
jackcros · 70-79, M
@Rickie4 Receiving a whacking on the backside and displaying the marks in PE was almost a “rite of passage” to being regarded as “one of the lads.”
Sharon · F
@jackcros That applied to us girls too. There was even something of a race to be the first in class to get the slipper each week.
Rickie4 · 61-69, M
@Sharon I never regretted getting the cane on that occasion and I had the slipper several times . One of the teachers gave a choice of a whack with the slipper or 100 lines and very few boys chose the lines.
Sharon · F
@Rickie4 We sometimes had a choice of the slipper or detention, more so in 5th and 6th forms. We nearly all opted for the slipper.
Rickie4 · 61-69, M
@Sharon It was mainly in the first three years for us - boys that opted for lines tended to be regarded as cowards so most went to the front and bent over.
