Most schools claimed that CP was a last resort but, in my experience, it was more often the first and only. Classroom slipperings were everyday events and caning were common too. I'm a bit younger than you so I expect our different experiences show how widely practices varied.

@Sharon It might have depended on how much control the Heads and/or Governors had over the teachers and school disciplinary policies, too.

It certainly seems many teachers were gratuitously cruel. Perhaps some were badly-trained if at all, in it only for the salary and holidays, thinking "respect" means "fear" and it should only ever be one-way.

My own teachers in all those years varied a lot. Most were good, some very good, even inspiring; a very few were frankly incompetent or just too fed up with the work to make the subject interesting; but none were sadistic.

Though a lot of parents were much worse. I suspect many simply resented their own progeny's existence, or had been brought up to think violence the solution to everything.

@Sharon that is only fair. My sister had a bit of a following and was the cause of her friends smarting bottoms
