Are there still schools that advocate it?

I know there are some schools that do still use corporal punishment. But even those seem to be very reluctant about it. As a last resort, opt out possible and so on. Is it just what they write publicly in the student and parent handbooks or is it their real policy about it? Are there still schools like many decades back that positively use corporal punishments as a primary tool for classroom discipline?

My school still does

@ashleygurlyor Hopefully you follow the rules, and not subject to it.

@ashleygurlyor Agree with the post above

When CP was used in UK schools, lots of schools claimed it was only used as a last resort. In practice it was often the first and only resort. Never trust what a teacher tells you.

@Strictmichael75 Yes, I got the slipper loads of times and the cane quite a few times too.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@Sharon definitely

@MaryWat that could have been a description of my school in the same era. Two of us went on to grammar school and were sitting GCE exams at 15; two others at 15 were convicted of manslaughter.

My kids attend a school that still has corporal punishment in the school handbook…& we’ve got to sign a permission form for it at the beginning of each school year, but you can of course opt out if you wanted to. My husband and I sign the form to allow it each year… though it’s unheard of that a kid is paddled, it’s used as a very very last resort they say…but kids just don’t get paddled anymore, I think they should just take it out of the handbook then, because the wooden paddle is collecting dust it seems.
Corporalcolleague · 61-69, M
@SW-User would the paddle be used in your home instead of at school?

@Corporalcolleague we use a hairbrush.

@SW-User I PMd you

I the UK it’s illegal. I suppose it’s possible that a few, eg religious, schools use it covertly.

My own school in England in the 1960s, unlike many at that time, used cp (the cane, nothing else) fairly rarely. But “as a last resort” would have been misleading. Rather, it was for crimes deemed especially heinous. For instance, it was unlikely that you would be caned for misbehaving in class, unless you did so very frequently. But if you were caught with a cigarette in your mouth, just once, you would be beaten, for certain.

@MartinII It's been illegal here in England in state schools since well before i was born, and was banned in private schools in 1998.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@MaryJo1996 Yes that’s right. Also now illegal even in homes in Scotland and Wales, though not easy to see how that can be enforced.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@MartinII Indeed. No one knows what happens behind closed doors.

The paddle is used at my kids school. The parent's have to sign a paper for it to be used. Most of the teacher's just give detention then use the paddle
ddlknaz · M
In the direction things are going with young kids, I think we need more corporal punishment.
Corporalcolleague · 61-69, M
@ddlknaz sent you a PM
Corporalcolleague · 61-69, M
19 of 50 states here in the US still allow the paddle....but within each state local policies to use or not use is in effect. In schools where paddling is allowed often parental consent and notification is required.
Kzhitizz · 22-25, M
Many Indian schools practice it. While officially banned, its common in schools attended by low income groups and government schools.

I think there was a web site which had details of school world wide that had CP I will try to find it.

As far as the UK is concerned I do not think any school now has CP - but I do recall my days 1960s - 1970s the belt and cane could be used.

yes
Casheyane · 31-35, F
I didn't know that is still a thing. In movies, kids just get sent to detention or made to clean up school rooms.
1olderguy20 · 61-69, M
@Casheyane down south and texas it is still used
emmasfriend · 46-50, F
I am assuming that where you live in Czechia it does not happen.

Do you discipline your two girls ?
If so, please tell us how.
chubbysteve99 · 51-55, M
none here which is a shame
My understanding is that the only public schools using it in the U.S. are in small towns in the South. Every place else there would be lawsuits, which is as it should be. Not everyone hitting your kid has the kid’s benefit in mind. That was so even when I was young.
In the U.S., mostly in the South. Others areas, parents object to it and don’t want anyone hitting their kids.
