I Witnessed Corporal Punishment At School

When I was at school corporal punishment was frequently used. It was an everyday occurrence to see a girl punished at the front of the class.

@Trysta09: Yes, you make a fair point. But my own recollection of detentions is that they made me resentful. I don't remember resenting a spanking. I just rubbed my stinging bottom, wiped away a tear and got on with life.

@MartinII: That's how I felt. Time wasting punishments like lines and detentions just made me resentful. I had no respect for teachers who imposed them. I had a lot of resepect for those teachers who slippered us for misbehaviour.

@MartinII and @Sharon: Maybe they should have an option for kids: one for those who would prefer detention and one for those who prefer being hit. I'm guessing the first line would be longer but we'd still be able to compare the recidivism rates easily enough.

I was spanked once in the gym, aged 9, with the rest of the class lined up to watch. I think the rareness of the event enhanced its effectiveness.

This was/is a great discussion of the merits of lengthy detentions over a few spanks or strokes of the cane/paddle. It is most interesting to me that detentions created great resentment but not the spanks/strokes. What explains this?

@Alfred22 For me, I think the time factor was a major consideration. A detention had to be waited for, and then was long and boring. A spanking was quickly over and done with. I’m talking about a spanking though - not six strokes of the cane!

Same at my school. During the course of the day it was almost certain one or two boys or girls would get the slipper.

It was the paddle at our school. Everyone had to put down their head on the desk and then the teacher would paddle or spank

Same here except my school was mixed sex so we saw boys and girls slippered.
