What is your experience with home or online schooling?

My youngest has social anxiety so I signed her up for online school and her grades have increased, I'm no teacher and happy we have the technology to do it this way.

As a teacher, in a school, I think that it's important to not only develop the child's intelligence but also that they cultivate a way to mingle with others.

Obviously, with the spectrum of neuro-divergency out there I can understand just how hard it is to find what actually works well for your child in a mainstream or even 'special needs' (for want of a better term) school in terms of interactions with others.

At best, it's a minefield!

Combine that with being a mum.

During 'The Covid Years' our school (I was Deputy Head at that point) went online and I found it very anxious for the parents and the children, and ourselves, on the objective of trying to keep on that uphill curve of learning and not letting anyone fall behind.

Myself, I suffered burnout because of the barrier to being face to face with the students. There's a lot of non verbal communication that you can only pick up, really, being in the same room as they are.

However, as there are many different stars in the sky and that we are all different to each other, there are also many different ways to teach and - most important - to learn. No one is better than the other. If it works, it works.

Glad that you have found a good platform for your daughter.

I don't think my sone would have graduated HS without OL school. He had ADHD and even with the local school systems portal, half his teachers didn't update it and he was frequently, simply not doing the work. Even when I followed up with them in person, it was challenging to even follow their expectations. OL school gave him and us the structure to keep him on task.

My daughter actually instigated the OL schooling, even though she didn't really have any issues (she likes shiny new objects). She started out okay, then she started drifting, and we decided to send her back to regular school. She thrived more in that environment.

My youngest nephew has autism and was refusing to go to school due to anxiety, my sister decided to home school him and now he's socially awkward with no real friends and has little or no chance of finding a job or a place in college without professional help.
Home schooling doesn't prepare kids for later life when they have to go out into the big world and find jobs, it also isolates them so it's a no from me.

It suits some kids but not others. I have a few families as friends who have home-schooled but I have also read reports of kids who suffered severely by not going to school during Covid....

I think it is great for some kids, they do better in the home setting.

Yes, I would be lost trying to teach.

As a postscript to my last comment @KerriJC, when I was studying for my degree (in Sociology) I was a member of an extra-mural group called "The Schools Without Walls Project" which discussed alternative methods of education. 50 years later I'm still interested.

My kids did well with it. I fell asleep during an online final. Other than that it wasn’t bad.

I am also so happy that methods of instruction are evolving in an effort to help every person learn as best as possible.
Online is a great option as long as they also get some level of social interaction too.

As for homeschooling the concept itself is not bad but be careful about some of the so called support groups. Some exist inside an evangelical echo chamber and get kind of culty.
Home school helps a lot so ofc her grades are up 🥳 The really long exams suck but there are not that many of them. You can take extra time when you need it!

My kids only did it during covid. They were glad to go back to real school.
It is so great kids have this kind of support and options instead of being penalized for not all fitting into one box.
