Got thoughts on public education?

I work in the system as a substitute teacher, for two counties in the state of Florida. (Which has some of the best public schools in the country.)

The British State schools should emulate their Independent counterparts. Sadly their Senior Management teams are inept. As are the Academy chain leaders.
Nothing wrong with the teachers though. Most are highly dedicated and work in appalling conditions.

@SW-User Well, teachers are human beings. I'm honest enough to admit that they aren't all perfect, (and I've got a few stories to back that up.) We find the biggest problem in the system is negligent parents. I think most teachers in America would agree with that.

@Reason10 I do not see that at all. I worked with troubled students, leading a team of twenty five. The problem always rested with inept senior management. Fortunately I got out before the hedge fund management accountants put their murky hands in. The Academy Chain leaders became the problem, not the solution. Such is England.

@SW-User I only speak for Florida public schools. As much as America's Democrats would like to think public education is standardized learning from coast to coast, that just isn't correct at all. Here in two Florida counties, each individual school might as well be a separate country, in terms of how its run. They don't even use the same textbooks. Being a sub means being able to see the big picture. And I would recommend ANY future teacher to have to spend at least a year as a substitute, in as many different schools as possible, to get the real picture of what's going on.

@SW-User The business model of most independent schools in the UK is based on selecting the easiest pupils to teach, a luxury not afforded to the state sector. I think independent schools should be given the same responsibilities as comprehensive schools, then see how they compare.

@SunshineGirl The first task I had to do at top public school was to tell a fourteen year old boy he would never see his parents together again.
