Go back to your own childhood and look at how things were for you. There are mainly three things why kids hate school, either it's the teacher, they do play favorites, the other students, whether it's peer pressure or bullying, or they're just plain bored and don't feel challenged enough. Talk to your kid to find out why.

The school admins often say that about kids who are not doing well. I think that is the biggest crock of crap ever. If someone is already failing, "challenging" them more isn't going to help.
Kind of like if someone is out of shape and cannot run an eight minute mile. It is not going to help by then expecting them to do it in seven minutes.

People can reason and speculate all they want - the fact is that school just sucks.
@CestManan Montessoris, also known as schools for gifted children, are full of students that were sent there by regular schools when they were assessed of not being challenged enough, I was recommended to be sent to one at the beginning of third grade in 1978 when a statewide IQ test in Oregon was done and I scored 148. The only reason why I didn't go was because my parents couldn't afford the tuition and it was too late in the year to apply for a scholarship. Later that year we moved to the next small city eight miles away, and even though it was in the same county, it was a separate school district than the one I was in, my new teacher refused to recognize my work from my previous school, despite having the same workbooks, she made me not only made me start from the beginning, but keep up with the current work as well, having to do double homework every night, which turned me from loving school to hating it within a month. By 6th grade I was outright refusing do do any homework, which pissed off my teachers, but despite that, I still aced tests and surprise quizzes, much to their puzzlement. So yes, many kids are bored and do poorly in school because of various things, among them is not being challenged enough.
