Geography field trip

What is your most disappointing memory of school?

Mine was the year 8 geography field trip to the Gower Peninsula. This was an eagerly anticipated rite of passage in my school. A joint residential with our male counterparts at the boys' school, and five days when we could wear our own clothes and be treated a bit more adult by the teachers.

Inevitably I was overlooked and ignored for the first four days as the popular girls asserted themselves and the natural order of the universe resolved itself 😕

Until the last evening. When I somehow managed to get a pencil eraser stuck in my nose 🤦‍♀️ All of a sudden I was the centre of attention and the life and soul of the party 🙄 When at around 10.30pm it became clear that this was not a party trick and it wasn't going to come out of its own accord, one of the teachers drove me to accident and emergency. I sat in the waiting room in my pyjamas and dressing gown while some medically qualified people also had a good laugh at my misfortune 😟

Then we drove back to the youth hostel and I once more slipped back into social obscurity 😔

Ah! sounds like it could have been a great time.... if it weren't for stupid erasers always ruining everything.

I don't know is disappointing is the right word but there was this one time

In the eighth grade I was in my third year of band class and was supposed go to a special band concert/field trip in the middle of that year. By that time, I was already sick of that class and decided the night before to just skip it and go to school like normal.

That day I'm sitting in English then suddenly the assistant band director barges in to take me out. I had none of my things. Not my performing clothes, not my trombone. I had to borrow all the stuff from someone else. The clothes didn't fit, and I had given up practicing for months, so I sounded horrible at the show.

Middle school was fun times.

@caPnAhab Oh no, a poorly rehearsed trombone part is not good news!
The Gower's a beautiful place, such a shame you have sad memories.

@Mindfulness It is lovely and I did enjoy the scenery even though other things didn't go right 🙂
@SunshineGirl I'm sure you've had your fair share of attention since.

My most disappointing memory of school was school in general . I am dislexic and in my school days it was a new thing and not alot new what it was so I got treated as stupid and lazy and just not trying . No one knew just how hard it was for me . My mum was fairly understanding but my dad wasnt and never felt anything I did was good enough for him .
I hated school and couldnt wait to leave .

@Rhode57 It is awful how dyslexia and other learning challenges were dealt with in the school system until quite recently. I knew two girls who were later diagnosed as adults, but throughout school were branded as 'stupid' 😟

@SunshineGirl About 15 years ago now I worked in a primary school as crossing patrol , midday supervisor and cleaner and there was a young girl there , long story cut short , I realised she was having problems and it took me to point it out . The teachers and headmistress had no idea .

Awwwwwww! 😭😭😭 If I was in school with you on that field trip I'd definitely be your friend! 🤗🤗🤗 I was never a popular girl either! 🙄🙄🙄 A pencil eraser up your nose sounds painful! 😭😭😭 I would of definitely given you a hug for comfort! 😁😁😁
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@MommyLucy Thanks! 😍 There was more damage to my pride than my nose, I can reassure you 🙂 I still can't for the life of me remember why I put it there in the first place 🤦‍♀️

@SunshineGirl Awwwww! 🤗🤗🤗 I wish I was there to comfort you! 😇😇😇 Kids do wild things it is part of the adventures spirit of childhood! (teenhood counts too) 😝😝😝
It’s great on the Gower...go back without pencil erasers....,

@TheSirfurryanimalWales The coastal footpath is gorgeous 🙂 This being geography, we spent our days taking soil samples and shaking bushes to see what insects dropped out 🙂
@SunshineGirl sounds more like a science trip....I did those as a student.

If it makes you feel and better, I got a pussy willow stuck in my ear that I couldn`t get out. 😳

We need a new reaction icon. One that simultaneously laughs and expresses sympathy!
We had a trip to Brighton. 3 nights overstay. We stayed in a youth hostel where I spent the time sharing a room with 8 girls that despised me, and me them. The only saving grace was on the first night one of the girls moaned and groaned in her sleep so much it turned her into an outcast.

@V00doo What subject do you teach?
@SunshineGirl Year 6

@V00doo That can be a very lively year group! 😊
