May December romance

Never heard of this term before until today. Apparently it's about two people with a big age gap having a relationship. kind of like 'gold digger', 'cougar', 'sugar daddy', etc.

Not always a gold digger or sugar daddy type of relationship. I have a friend whose daughter met a man online thru their jobs and they got to know each other online and then decided to meet for lunch bc they realized they were attracted to each other. Over time the relationship deepened and turned from friendship to love. Neither is well off financially, but together they live very comfortably. He is 60 and she is 40.

phrase was around a long time

earliest use?

Its first literary appearance was in the 14th Century when Chaucer wrote of a young woman named May who married Mr. January, a greying gentleman

there are suggestions it may have existed in the Classical period

My Grandma used to use that term. She used it yo describe her marriage. Although she was only 7 years older than Grandad. They married soon after WW1. Which he'd been too young to serve in. She said the shortage of men made her look for a May to December romance.

I think May-December refers to a younger woman and older man. Theres also December-May refers to older woman and younger man.
