I would not remember it now but I am sure I never learnt any prayer by heart. The nearest I come to that is being able to go along with the Lord's Prayer provided I am not confused by it being a version tinkered with.
As for praying at bed-time - how quaint! Although vaguely Anglican, and our Mam sometimes went to church, none of our family ever followed that Victorian tradition..

I used to pray in bed. @ArishMell

@Spoiledbrat Ah, that was something I never did, not even when I was young enough for my parents to send me to Sunday School... while they stayed at home.

It only took me an afternoon.
I had to memorize the 13 articles of faith when i was a kid so memorizing things is kind of second nature to me. Like I don't even keep a library card I just have the number memorized.

@SW-User She walks in beauty like the nigh. I know what poem you are talking about but I've never tried to memorize it.

There's one line I like because of the roller coaster way it rolls off the tongue - -
Which heaven to gaudy day denies (the dee day dee of it)

@SW-User I like that too.

If i ever learned any, i don't recall.
We were never expected to pray before meals or before bed.
My parents were not religious. Even though they did send us to a methodist church(without them) with an opt out provision.

First the Lord's Prayer. Second the grace that was used at meal times at school. That was in Latin. I can still recite it 60 years later.

@SW-User Thanks, but it's not really amazing. At our age long-term memory is often better than short-term. I can also remember Tottenham's 1961 FA Cup winning team, or at least I think I can, and I'm an Arsenal supporter! But I sometimes forget whether I have put sugar in my tea in the morning.

True... all of what you said.
But you know, about a month ago I discovered one of my high school yearbooks from the mid 1960s was posted page by page on the internet. I remembered most of the people (okay - most of the hot chicks!) all wrong. They didn't look anywhere near as alluring as my brain had apparently morphed them over the years.

Yes. I did the "Now I lay me down to sleep...." prayer from early childhood. I guess I stopped using it in junior high, but I still pray every night and other times.

@exexec
Junior high sounds about right... I don't know about you but I prob recited it that late too because I'd feel guilty if I didn't.

@SW-User I think that was the same for me.

No. It was the blessing for meal time
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@TrinityRae Oh, we had those, called "Grace", at school. Just a meaningless ritual; really.
TrinityRae · 41-45, F
@ArishMell I wouldn’t say meaningless but I understand what you mean
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@TrinityRae Well, it had a meaning but one lost by constant repetition for no other reason than The Thing To Do, by people who may not even take it seriously anyway.

The Lord's Prayer.
Spoiledbrat · F
No, I just memorized because I liked it but I did go to church growing up. @Spoiledbrat

One of the most cruel "prayers" ever taught to children.

My mother always made me mention Uncle George. The guy was like a big kid who was harmless enough, never married and could "play the spoons" on his knee.
