They were very skilled, dedicated craftsmen.

A stone-mason among the maintenance staff of one of England's cathedrals recently talked of his work, on the radio. I would think they use power-tools as necessary but he said if the Mediaeval masons could come back they would still recognise the hand tools and techniques used now.

It helped get great results when each craftsman considered his work a gift to God. They wanted to do their best.
