Religion?
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Daviszabecki there's a thin line between religion and cults but I stay away from absolutes. Like I won't tell you a god does or doesn't exist but there's a thin line between cults and religion. You can start as a cult but get millions of churches and apart of govt politics, it's religion.

@BlueSkyKing I despise that irrelevant venn diagram of irrational behavior. And I despise organized religion as well!
It can be used to disqualify even itself. Just put in different labels.
Science itself has absolutes. That is how it can be done. The moment you attempt to integrate anything, is the very moment you leave out what is beyond the integration. And infinities definitely exist, in the infinites.

@DeWayfarer I agree and partially disagree.. not with what you said but regarding the diagram. Some of that stuff even if there's only a psychological explanation has helped me. At the same time, most of that stuff promotes magical thinking and gets people into trouble.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@SatanBurger the thing with that diagram is it doesn't recognize the unknown. That is the infinities that I was referring to. And magic itself can be considered an unknown. That there might be explanations for magic few ever think about. Or even want to think about.
Lightening was magic of the God's for caveman because it was an unknown. And you can do the same thing for every one of them. Just what type of unknown? It's infinite! 🤷🏻♂

@Convivial So... it's not like I disagree with you exactly. And for the record, I'm not trying to make any moral arguments on if God does or doesn't exist but a lot of the mainstream religions started out as cults.
Christians were very small group of people and there's tons of writing about them making everyone p issed off because they like to go from town to town to preach.
I'm not gonna say whether Christians deserve the ire or not because who can really say but there's ample evidence that it started as a cult and just got bigger.
Scientology has huge churches and mysteriously large ships in the middle of the ocean where no one can hear you scream. Of course it's a cult but many mainstream religions started out like that.
I would venture to say that the crusades and many holy wars are the result of cultists doing what cults do and killing many who didn't follow their cult leader i.e. whatever the church said at the time.
Of course now it's gotten better with some denominations changing to be more inclusive but religion vs cult are very very close in nature.

@SatanBurger I agree with everything you said and maybe my comment sounded harsh against you, and that was not my intent ..
My beef is this... Words have power and when they are misused often they take on new meanings which often be bases their original meaning... Two examine during to mind.... McDonald's is NOT a restaurant in any shape or form... It's a cheap, chain burger joint selling stuff mascarding as real food.... The other is scientology...

@Convivial That's true about the McDonald's example.
