if i’ve attempted suicide, does that make me a sinner?

please i just need to know
SW-User
Yes, suicide and an attempt at it is sin, but that is not when you became a sinner. You have already committed sin way before that because we have all sinned at a very young age already. Also, we have all inherited Adam's sin nature (Romans 5:12) so we are born sinners (Psalms 51:5). The Bible says that it is a sin to lie (Exodus 20:16) and we all have lied. The Bible says that it is a sin to lust (Matthew 5:28). The Bible says that even the thought of foolishness is sin (Proverbs 24:9). We have all sinned. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"

I am so sorry that you are struggling with depression and suicidal ideation. You're not alone, my friend. Things can get pretty dark for me also, but may I give you a word of encouragement?

Firstly, please do me a favor and hear me out on this.

So, James 1:5 says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

I want you to pray and say, God, I want wisdom. Please give me wisdom. I want to know the right thing to do here. And truly mean it. That's step number one.

There is only one solution to what you're going through and that is your Creator.

You know, many great men of God in the Bible struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. Look:

Jonah struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts in Jonah 4:3 - Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

Elijah also struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts in 1 Kings 19:4 - But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

The Apostle Paul also struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts in 1 Corinthians 9:15 - But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

And in Romans 9:1-3 - I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

So, don't think that you have some kind of a mental illness and that something is really wrong with you. Quite frankly, something is right with you if you're depressed because this world is a very vile and wicked place. And if you have no cause in life and no reason to live, then suicide just seems like a natural conclusion to a miserable life.

But I am going to tell you that there is a reason for you to live. If you're done with your life, there's somebody that wants it.

Philippians 1:21 - For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

You see, Paul had some suicidal thoughts. Paul was saying many times that it is just better for me to die and I shouldn't even be here on earth and there were some bad things that he went through. But he had a cause and that cause was serving Jesus Christ - God.

And you say, what about "to die is gain"? Well, when a saved person dies, they go to an incredible eternity in heaven with the Lord. Why miss out on that? Don't take your life right now without understanding what the Bible says about what you can have if you believe on Jesus Christ and give your life to Him.

You might feel like a mess mentally, but that is exactly the kind of person that Jesus Christ wants. YOU are exactly the kind of person that God is looking for. Don't throw away your life when God wants to buy it.

Philippians 1:23-24 - For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

You can have a reason to live. I have a reason to live. I can tell you that I have been suicidal in my past, I have struggled with the deepest depression, to the point where I was on medication and I had locked myself in a dark room, put towels over the windows to block light from coming in and stayed in that room for weeks.

But eventually I got through it and remembered the point in my life where I gave myself over to the Lord and he bought me; he purchased me with the blood that he shed on calvary. His death, burial and resurrection. He paid for all of my sins. He paid it all. And what does he get in exchange? My life. He called me and has me preaching the Gospel and now I have a cause for living. And there's times I still get depressed, there's still times that I have a bad days, there's times people still turn against me and hate me. But I have a reason to live. Wouldn't you like a reason to live? Besides just the ridiculous nonsense of this world; the money and all the worldly desires. No. Live for God. Give him your life.

This is Jesus Christ speaking. Here's his invitation for you in Matthew 11:28-29 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Are you done with your life now? Have you had enough? Have you had enough of the relationships that go bad? Have you had enough of trying to make something of yourself in the career, college education or Jobs that fail? All the stuff that this world has had to offer, are you through with it? Because if you are, then God is ready to purchase you. He says "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden." Are you laboring right now? Is every day a struggle when you get up? Are you heavy laden? Are there things that are really depressing you and you can't see a way out of it? YOU'RE what Jesus Christ wants. You are right at the brink of salvation. You are right at heaven's doorstep. You're at the foot of the cross. You can look up at Jesus Christ and day He died for my sins. God, will you please save me. Salvation is very simple and if you are depressed, you are right there ready to go.

Not only does God see what you're going through, but He can relate to it. He can relate to you.

Just think about what Jesus Christ felt and experienced. He experienced such an incomprehensibly deep level of sorrow, He experienced a level of pain greater pain than anyone. He left glory to experience his own creation mock him, ridicule him, spit on him, hit him and crucify him and He took all of that on for that very creation, for you, for me, for everyone, for even the vilest and lowest of men. Look at what it says in this prophecy in Isaiah 53:3-5 about The Lord Jesus Christ, "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

Jesus Christ says in Luke 5:32 says, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

Jesus Christ came not to call the rich, the successful and the one with the great relationships and whatever else. He wants you! He'll purchase you. Call out to the Lord. Call upon Him.

I plead with you to read this Gospel message and get saved and then you can have a purpose in your life and live for Jesus Christ. Please take my advice.

The Bible way to Heaven

"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." - 1 John 5:13

1. Admit you are sinner

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

1John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Every single person in the world has committed sin and none of us are righteous. God desires perfection and we come short of that, therefore we can not do anything by our works or deeds to get to heaven, since Isaiah clearly says that our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

2. Realize the punishment for sin

Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death; ……..

Our penalty for sin is death, but not just a physical death, also a spiritual death in hell.

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

In the next chapter, Jesus explains who will take part in the second death.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

There are a lot of really bad things mentioned in this verse but notice it says all liars. Everyone has told a lie before in their life, so that would make us All liars.

Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

Therefore we can see from this verse that every person in the world deserves hell and is destined to go there unless they have a Saviour.

3. Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried and rose again the third day

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

This verse very clearly shows that God does not want us to go to hell, since he loved us and sent his Son, Jesus Christ to die on the Cross for our sins. Also, note here that someone must believe that Jesus is God. God is the only Saviour so Jesus must be God. Jesus is the Word of God in John 1:1 and John 1:14.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

God is three in one (the trinity) and Jesus is part of that Godhead.

1John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

The gospel explains how Jesus paid for our sins and the bible says that the salvation that Jesus purchased is given to us as a gift.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Salvation is a gift. For example if I gave you a present and asked you for a dollar, would that be a gift? The answer would be no. Same thing with God, God doesn’t give you eternal life and say to you that you have to go to church or do good deeds or live a good life. If you had to do any of those things it would not be a gift. The question is, Since Jesus paid for the sins of the whole world (1John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world) do you believe that everyone will go to heaven? The answer to that question is No. There is something you have to do to be saved or in other words to receive the gift of eternal life. A person in the bible asked this same question “what must I do to be saved?” and here is the answer:

Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

The only thing someone has to do to go to heaven is believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and here are some other verses to prove that:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

We can clearly see here that believing is the only requirement to go to heaven and not believing is the only thing that will send you to hell. It didn’t say anything about changing your life or giving up sin or going to church to be saved, it just says believe.

John3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

These three verses in John show that as soon as you believe on Jesus Christ, You immediately have everlasting life right now, in this life. This is how we can know for sure right now that we are going to heaven. The word “hath” in these verses simply means “has” in modern day English. If someone thinks they can lose their salvation then they are not saved! If God said that you have everlasting life and that you will never die spiritually, could he take back your salvation or send you to hell for any reason? God can Not take back everlasting life, for one it wasn’t really everlasting if it ended and second of all that would make God a liar, since he promised a never ending life. This next verse proves that if someone thinks they can lose their salvation than they are not saved and never were saved. People will say that they believe in Jesus but what does it mean to believe and what do you have to believe? Believing isn’t hard, it’s as easy as believing that I have a black truck even though you never saw it before. You are taking my word for it and have put your faith in me. This applies with God and salvation. 1John5:10-11 states that you have to believe that God (Jesus) gives you eternal life.

1John 5:10-11 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

4. Call on the name of the Lord for Salvation

If you believe what the bible says it takes to go to heaven, then you can be saved right now if you put your faith in Jesus Christ. Praying to God/calling upon his name is the way we express our faith in him for salvation.

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Let me help you form a prayer. Realize that it is not just words that save you but your faith in Jesus Christ.

“Dear Jesus, I believe that I am a sinner and that I deserve to go to hell, but I believe that you died on the cross for my sins and rose again the third day. I’m putting my trust in you to take me to heaven when I die. Please save me Jesus. Amen.”

Is it a sin to take any life? God did not put us on this Earth and give us life, for us to take it upon ourselves to end our own life. Life is precious and should be treated as such. But when we do sin, God does forgive us. Jesus wants to be our Savior and he does rescue us, when we invite him into our heart and life as Savior. If one does not know Jesus as Savior, that is why their life feels empty and void. The Bible says that Jesus is the answer. We have all sinned, but the good news is that if we go to Jesus in prayer and ask him to be our Savior, he will do so. He turns no one away. As soon as we invite him into our life to be our savior, he sends the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us in life, and he is always with us, indwelling us with his Holy Spirit. You never have to be, nor feel, alone again, and He will never leave you, nor forsake you. That is his promise to us and he never breaks a promise.

Instead of taking our life, God has equipped us to make changes, so we can be happier in life. Hard times are only temporary and we must carefully think things out. If we ask God for help, he will definitely help us, and guide us to right and healthy thinking. He is the missing piece to the puzzle of life. Jesus makes life worth living.

Pain doesn't just show up in our life for no reason. It's a sign from God that something needs to change in your life, so that you can be happy, and Jesus is the one that can make that change for you. When one accepts Jesus as their Savior, He immediately sends His Holy Spirit to transform your life to a brand new life in Jesus.... just as if you had never sinned in your life, because when he forgives you of your sins, he also forgets them and that's when you start your brand new life in Christ, as his child forever. It is nothing short of a miracle.
Original Sin makes us all a sinner.

As far as suicide and sin goes... I believe that it was only a sin if you completed the attempt and lost lost your life.

Now, I say "Was" because even the Catholic Church now avoids calling people who commit suicide "sinners" because they accept that illnesses can make people do that - and it can't be determined that the deceased wasn't sick or unaware of the consequences of what they were doing at the time.

Remember, to sin, you have to know that it's wrong and willingly do it in full knowledge of the fact that it's wrong.

No, I don't believe there's any such thing as sin. Original sin is a very specific belief system that I just don't see the logic of. There's no point in punishing someone after they have already punished themselves by going thru the pain of dying. Dying really hurts obviously, in order to ignore all that and then still be punished after, makes little sense.

I can't really help as I'm not a doctor but I think I'll leave this here in hopes that you know you can just exist, you don't have to put pressure on yourself. You are allowed to exist. I dunno, I just think it's a good video I've seen recently.

We are all sinners. Each and everyone of us (rom. 3 :23).to attempt suicide is not a sin, but if you succeed, then it is (exodus 20 : 13).
Adstar · 56-60, M
Murder is sin.. Suicide is self murder.. Attempting to murder youyrself is sin..

Oh and you where a sinner long before you attempted to suicide.. You where without sin for a time when you where an innocent little one.. But like the rest of us your faulty sin nature came to the fore and you became a sinner..

Of course The LORD Jesus has provided the Way for us humans to be justly forgiven all our sins.. It's a great blessing to be forgiven.. May you be forgiven valzgore..
You only sin when you succeed.

Despair and darkness, sin and corruption, are the gift of the devil to mankind, whereas God the Father has given you the incredible shining gift of life, so that you may observe his great works, and grow and prosper...for that is the life God wishes you to live.
Possibly, but you are still able to repent and ask/get forgiveness.

At least that's my understanding of the more or less official Catholic answer
Silemhaff · 31-35, M
No, but you'll lose your only chance to live! and that's not cool for u
