What was the lesson?

God and Satan are good friends...?
Iwillwait · M
@walabby No. The fact Satan challaneged that Job was loyal due to being provide so we'll for. The Lord have Satan permission to test Job to show Job's dedicationband Faith to the Lord.

People are limited in their understanding of God

Some people make the mistake of making up their own answers as to why God does what He does or why God allows things to happen...

In the story of Job both Job and His friends debated the reasons why God had allowed Job to suffer.. God came to them during their debate to tell them that they where both wrong..

So the lession is don't try and think up answers as towhy God does what He does.. In the end God will reveal the reasons to whom He wills to reveal them to..

Patience and acceptance through tough times without blaming of others...

Basically something that's completely omitted from current culture.

We must trust god even when we can't understand him. Even when he is thoroughly confusing to us

glad tha tyou asked! best answer that I have heard is from Bernardo Kastrup. concept of God (not reality of God, that is a different question) that is presented in old testament is shown here: pure emotion, chaotic, not rational. Satan is presented as an aspect of God, the meta-cognitive aspect of God. it's not the new testament version of god and devil.

Job 13:15
Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.

Respond, don't react...
The Book of Job in a nutshell:

God: "Job is a good man. I will torture him to see if he stays good.
Job: "Why is God punishing me?"
Job's friends: "It must be your fault."
Job: "I am undeserving, but it’s not my fault."
Elihu: "God is greater than all of us."
God: "Yes, I am greater than all of you."
Job: "You are powerful, I’m sorry."
God: "Right answer. I'll stop torturing you now."

That’s it. No moral lesson in those forty chapters. No answer for suffering. No reasoning, no redeeming social values to the graphic violence. The point of the book is simply: "The Lord is powerful. He can make you suffer. Don’t ask why, Be faithful. Might makes right. God can do whatever he wants."

DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Elessar Me too! I never knew that's what it meant. She is Italian too

There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Shallow thinkers miss the obvious.

former Christian here. can confirm: good deeds do not lead to good outcomes / trust god even if it seems unfair

btw, the tanakh has satan appearing as an authority in the 'divine assembly', challenging god and questioning job's faith in god - pretty cool

@tenente this is a really good answer
