Inspired by another post earlier: a proper bed has been my best investment in recent years.

The first time I purchased a bed, mattress and pillow for myself, I went for the best quality to costs ratio. When my health declined and I didn't spend 1/3 of my life in it, but closer to 60%, I figured I should consider quality more than price for its replacement.

After excluding the best options that would put me into debt, I narrowed my options to good enough for €1200 to really good for €4600. That felt like the difference between a slightly more expensive month than usual and better hoping nothing else needed replacing for a few years.

But then I figured a bed should fairly easily last 10 years, putting the difference between just good enough and really good at about 95 cents a day/night. Experiencing less pain seemed worth going with the more expensive but better option.

That may have been one of my best choices I ever made. Not only did the 10 hours a day outside of bed become less painful, but therefore also more productive, and I've been able to adjust to ratio from 14 passive and 10 hours to 12-12. 10 slightly productive hours to 12 really productive hours is huge! Definitely worth 95 cents, despite a HUGE initial investment that worried me at the time.

I like your thinking process, and it's good news because it's given you good results! You deserve your "nerdy" title!

Yes, a nights sleep can make or break your day. A good nights sleep can make a real difference. Grear job for making the investment.
A good restful sleep is really an investment. I’m glad you’re happy with the purchase.
Om chuffed you calculated for the best thing.

Its a little scary buying big purchases, money doesnt always equal quality.
And beds are a tough guess - its not easy to know what your body needs.

I spare absolutely no expense when it comes to bed and my sleep. Same with shoes.

There are just some things that demand it, and I'm okay with it.

Glad you did the best for you!

I spent under a thousand US dollars on a firm, queen-sized mattress, plus a base (a metal skeleton with a bag stretched over it, literally!). I reused my old simple metal frame with its wheels, that actually held it all off the floor.

After a month I decided the mattress was too firm. So I spent $20 on a 1.5 inch queen-sized memory foam mattress topper. Ahhh! So much better.

I should have just gotten a memory foam mattress to begin with! But they felt too squishy at the time!
