From a kid perspective I totally agree with you. My parents would put me to bed and I would lay there for hours sometimes until I was truly tired. But as a parent I always had reasonable bedtimes for my kids. High school age they can be trusted more as long as they get up on time and grades are good. No phones or computers in the bedroom at night though even though I would let them stay up later.
