Why do people still expect you to be married in order to have kids? This isnt the 1950s

indyjoe · 56-60, M
There is a lot of expectation that has carried over from times past...but research has shown that kids fare better when they are raised in solid and happy two parent homes. Kids need both a mother and father, and that's also why it is still expected. It's not just about "old worn out ideas".
Doomflower · 36-40, M
I don't think anyone should have kids. If I had three wishes I would wish humans would become completely sterile. Not a single gamete will survive.
chrisCA · M
@Doomflower Sad to say, but the Earth, and other livings things would be better off without us.
Why do people expect you to have kids ?

@Underconstruction cause people think it's the 50s still
SW-User
Because the responsibility to upkeep the child is then legally held by both parents.
If a couple is not married and say the father does a runner, he is not obliged to pay for the child.

@Keepitsimple my sis is going through this crap right now. She's divorced and seeking full custody of the kids, because he's a drunk.she's filled out all the proper paperwork to get child support. He will end up in jail!
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Exactly it’s time consuming but worth it and all they need is a place of employment or home address and they round them up. You do get the money eventually. I hope she stays strong. @SW-User

@Keepitsimple she's very strong. Things will work in favor.
what was wrong with the 50s --just asking
seashells · 31-35, F
@chrisCA that too
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
And we’ve also come a long way. It still doesn’t mean a child shouldn’t have and doesn’t deserve to have 2 parents.@seashells
@seashells you have to remember the 50s was the start of the young era of the Civil Rights movement for blacks - such as Brown V. Board of Education. Women did stay home and have kids because the father or the man of the house made enough money to support a family - today cant do that. So saying a woman was treated like shit by letting her stay home and not have to go to work is pretty sweet - I think you are off with the amount of babies they had by 897
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Because I don’t wanna raise my grandchildren
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Exactly but less chance with two parents, and a child needs both parents daily.@seashells
seashells · 31-35, F
@Keepitsimple no they dont. I only had one parent
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
So did I.@seashells

it's also not utopia times where your other has no quarrel staying. A marriage is at least something to bind them
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
Are you sure as Trump seems to want to take the US back to that period of time
Beacuse its better/easier for kids to grow up with a stable family
Nighttalker · 56-60, M
Where the kid might be supported by the paycheck of one or both parents & not be dependent upon welfare, food stamps, gov’t housing etc. If you can support both you & your child on your own, then go for it.
If you’re planning on welfare raising your baby, there’s where the problems arise.
seashells · 31-35, F
@Nighttalker I dont make much so I'm going to have to go the welfare route. After all that's how I grew up.
Nighttalker · 56-60, M
@seashells if you need it to get you on your feet, that’s great use it. But don’t make it a way of life because you were raised on it. Get an education, learn a trade show your kid what success is!

@Greenbare the kids father doesnt care
ABCDEF7 · M
@seashells But that's what society expects and in most cases of legal marriage, bound the man to take care of family.
chrisCA · M
Depending on the laws in your jurisdiction, being legally married can make it easier on your kids when it comes to their rights.
