Because the responsibility to upkeep the child is then legally held by both parents.
If a couple is not married and say the father does a runner, he is not obliged to pay for the child.

Not true. Blood test confirms that and child support garnished. If it. Can’t be garnished it’s very simple to fill out the paperwork to find his ass and have him thrown in jail until he comes up with the money.@SW-User

@Keepitsimple my sis is going through this crap right now. She's divorced and seeking full custody of the kids, because he's a drunk.she's filled out all the proper paperwork to get child support. He will end up in jail!

Exactly it’s time consuming but worth it and all they need is a place of employment or home address and they round them up. You do get the money eventually. I hope she stays strong. @SW-User
