To me, he might genuinely feel that way, but saying it is a bit off. It implies he wants you to see him as someone who likes you and would work hard for you
But who isn't asking you out and isn't working hard for you.
If he likes you than he needs to try to actually form a connection rather than doing a pretend gesture by saying he will do something that he literally admits he cannot do (and thus doesn't deserve credit for)

He’s possibly implying he thinks you’re a gold digger and is checking on your reaction. If you don’t bat an eyelid it probably means you don’t care about him being rich or not. However you shouldn’t marry a coworker. I had three potential coworker boyfriends, all of which never really went anywhere and one went very wrong.

Are you dating? Then he might be serious. If you aren't dating, he's likely just flirting, or maybe just running an idea by you to see how you react.

Maybe. Sometimes people put all their self worth in their wallet. Or maybe he’s cynical because life.
