Catholics are a type of christian

DoubleRings · 51-55, F
If you’re catholic you are christian. If you’re Christian you may or may not be Catholic.

I am a Catholic married to an Anglican. Both Christians.
@WendyLopez43 They do have doctrinal differences, but "Christian" means "of or pertaining to Christ", as an adjective, and, as a noum, an adherent of His teachings.

If you look up an article on Martin Luther, it will outline the main points of difference between the Lutheran Church & the Roman Church, and many of Luther's objections were carried into Protestant churches.

The Eastern Orthodox Church(es; they tend to be by country, but all flow from the "Eceumenical Patriarch",the overall head of the Eastern Orthodox Church) split from the Roman Church in the 11th century, long before Luther's split in the 16th century, and on quite different grounds.

There are other top-level branches, as well.

They are all Christian, but tend to differ in theological details which are quite bewildering to at least the casual observer.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
@SomeMichGuy the question should be clarified to say “is anyone a catholic married to someone else from another branch of Christianity?”
@DoubleRings I am sure what is meant is:

"Do Roman Catholics intermarry with other Christians?"

because I'm sure that the OP means the first phrase, and might mean "Protestants"--rather than "other Christians"--for the end.

Even many Protestants don't realize the jostling in the "Catholic" line...!
I thought Catholics were Christian....
@WildWings

I know, right??
WildWings · 70-79, M
@Soossie yes. Catholics and Protestants are Christians but Wendy Lopez who wrote the question is unaware of that.
Casheyane · 31-35, F
@WildWings @Soossie Catholics and born again Christians for instance have differences in belief and practices (ex: about sculpted idols). I think that's what the poster meant. I can see why a couple made from these two may face issues.
Catholic is Christian
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@FreeSpirit1 they like to distance themselves from each other
SW-User
Catholicism is a Christian religion
SW-User
@WendyLopez43 Well us humans often choose what divides us, not unites us.
SW-User
@SW-User it has gotten a little better though.

When i was a kid, the nuns told us that Protestants were doomed to hell.
acpguy · C
@SW-User I heard the same stuff to. The nuns got mad at me when I asked if Jesus was Jewish and was going by a strict form of the Hebrew religion then why aren't we all Hebrew rather than Catholic.🤣
TexChik · F
Catholics are Christians .
TexChik · F
@Theyitis Seriously? You "thought". I doubt that. Catholicism is alive and well in Texas, as is all other Christian faiths.
Theyitis · 36-40, M
@TexChik They don’t have Catholics in southern Missouri, that’s Protestant country.
TexChik · F
@Theyitis about 6 missouris could fit into Texas. Its a big state, lots of beautiful churches.
Northwest · M
Christians as in born-again Christians and Charismatic Evangelicals, only recognize themselves as the true Christians, and all other Christians to be errant in their ways. This includes Christians.

Catholics' attitude is "cool, whatever"....
@Northwest The unqualified term "Christian" means a follower of the teachings of Jesus, the Christ.

That includes Monophysites (who broke off long before Chalcedon), the Roman church of the sole Western/Latin Patriarch, the Orthodox churches which sprang from the three, then four, Eastern/Greek Patriarchs, and the many reformations of that, including the Lutheran Church, the Church of England/Anglican Communion, etc., etc., etc.

If someone means something else, they need to be up front in qualifying it.

Esp. the "evangelical" Christians, who may not even evangelize, and even don't seem to be familiar with the contents of the evangel.
Theyitis · 36-40, M
Maybe this will help: the churches that call themselves “Christian Churches” are a Protestant denomination within Christianity whose members are referred to, I believe, as Disciples of Christ. So like Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Disciples of Christ, and some others are all Protestants. Protestants, Catholics, and Lutherans are all Christians. But when you see a “Christian Church”, that’s just Disciples of Christ, which is just one small denomination of Christianity. Clear as mud now?
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
Yep, me and my wife
WildWings · 70-79, M
@ronisme1 So you are both Christians.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@WildWings I see it that way, sorry, don't want to get into this. She doesnt
WildWings · 70-79, M
@ronisme1 OKay. No probs.
bowman81 · M
I am a Baptist and was married to a Catholic for 51 yrs. Both of us were Christians. She died in 2020.
Keepitsimple · 56-60, F
We’re Catholic which is Christian.
Catholics know they and Protestants are both Christians. But I have only ever seen Protestants say Catholics are NOT Christians. The schism did a lot of damage. Plus the troubles in Ireland. And American Christianity gets a lot of it from its Irish immigrant influence. All together that hate has gone on for centuries.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
Catholics are Christian.
smiler2012 · 61-69
{@wendylopez] yes my mothers grandparents on my mothers side . my great grandad was a catholic and my great grandma was not . when the catholic priest came to see my great grandfather the priestvtreated my grandma though she was not there because she was not of the catholic faith
My wife is Catholic, and I am a non-denominational Christian.

Catholics are Christian
WildWings · 70-79, M
Catholics are Christians. 🤔
RubySoo · 56-60, F
Catholics are Christians!
BabyLonia · F
Technically both are Christians.

I have friends where one is Catholic and the other is Church of England
@BabyLonia And both of those are the "true" Catholics!
acpguy · C
It shou8ld not matter. Christians are nothing more than Catholics. Both originated from Constantine's use of the Holy Roman Empire / Roman Catholic Church to bring all of his empire under one religion to better control people. We are seeing the same happening today except it is under the name of Global Government and there is a lot of misinformation / lies being put out to control people just as the Roman Catholic church did. Our new lies are racism, inflation, global warming, COVID and other things to scare people into submission.
WildWings · 70-79, M
@acpguy "Christians are nothing more than Catholics" Would you like to explain that one? 🤔

I thought Catholics were Christian. What else are they?
You need to get educated.
@WendyLopez43 If you think Catholics are not Christian, you are sorely lacking in the very basic education needed to form a coherent argument.
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@SomeMichGuy they act like they're different...
@WendyLopez43 There are definite differences in theology, teachings, emphasis.

But they are all Christian.
SW-User
Yes, I'm Catholic and my husband is Christian and he's also Catholic and I'm also Christian 😁
walabby · M
That terminology is divisive nonsense! Catholics basically invented Christianity!
Nimbus · M
Only the husband would be Christian ;)
caesar7 · 61-69, M
My bro-in-law is Anglican.
