It is important to some people as a symbolic celebration of their love for another person. Legally it has become somewhat irrelevant in many western countries because for example in Canada common law partners ie someone you live with for at least a years in entitled to all the same rights as a spouse anyway.

@Unloved: In some ways. In other ways it sucks. You date someone and live with them for a year they can leave and take half your assets with them.
