What are your thoughts on LDR and meeting people online?

What are peoples thoughts and experiences with this? I've had one LDR and it didn't end well, which has made me very retiscent to ever go down that road again. Has anyone ever had a bad experience? Any success stories?

Anyone contemplating this question should read this story:
"The Life and Death of Jesse James" by Josh Olsen in LA Weekly.

It's easy to find if you Google it.

This story kinda says it all. I find it hard to comprehend the motivations of such people. But this kind of thing does happen a lot online.
