My mom's friend has been married to her husband now for 25 years despite a tiny apartment in a poor neighborhood being the only place he could afford. She says she makes him happy and doesn't care where they live, she's reassured him.

Bless them. If they are both happy, dishwashers and fine china are irrelevant. Too many people live in huge houses so they don't have to be near each other.
