How many break ups in a relationship do you need to say it's over?

I have a few friends that already entered these weird cycles of breaking up and getting back with their partners, but I wonder if that's what keeps them together, I mean the excitment of getting back after a fight, or the innability to break the cycle.

I don't think there's a definitive answer to that, as each relationship is unique. I know of a couple that's been married 40-50 years and has gone through numerous separations during that time.
