Why can't I let people in?

I love connecting with people but as soon as I feel it might be something more I freak out. And I shut them out. It's like I just can't let anyone into my life. I wish I could but even the thought of it terrifies me. I love being alone but I wonder what it would be like if I finally let someone in...

Only you can answer that question I'm afraid... in these matters I trust my gut instinct with my life, but maybe yours is less reliable? If so, advice from people you value can help.
