I usually try to buy all beef hot dogs without nitrates. Applegate Farms makes organic uncured hot dogs. They were recommended to me as treats for my dog, originally, to help train him when he was eating his own...er...anyway, it seems that you can't feed nitrate laden treats to dogs.

I think that's the first time I became aware of nitrates as a bad thing. I have also been known to buy Kosher hot dogs, because I know they will be assembled with at least a small amount of cleanliness.
