If anyone tried that on me Id run in the opposite direction.

Manipulators are dishonest; it's not possible to have a functional relationship with one.

I really pity anyone who feels they have to act this way just to keep someone in their life. It must be a very tough thing to do in leaving someone who does this, but they certainly need professional help because giving in to them will only mean a lifetime of putting up with their behaviour and that certainly isn't a real loving marriage for either of them.
