I think it's justified.. a man shouldn't hit a woman, they are much stronger and so shouldn't hit someone weaker and less able to defend themselves.. A man vs another man is a more even match.. and it's likely to have triggered his protective instincts..
But as you reasonably state.. there could be more we don't know.. but it's hard to imagine how anything could justify the first guy hitting the woman.

@Adaydreambeliever Neither of the men hit the woman. The woman’s s/o hit the man who flirted with her infront of him.

@Stark Ahh got it.. hitting ON, I mistook that for hitting on, as in hitting, like loving on. OK then, no, not justified! And thank you for drawing that to my attention, I am very tired today! Perhaps tireder than I thought!
